Our Story
AlgoRhythm was founded in 2014 as “Ceuvelswing”, because we started at he same time that the creative, sustainable hub the Ceuvel started. Our first classes were taught there, on their famous houseboats on land. In 2015 we acquired our own space just around the corner and changed our name to reflect our passion for rhythm and nerdiness.
Ceuvelswing/AlgoRhythm was founded by Ellen Maassen, who ended up at the Ceuvel through her brother. She had learned to dance Lindy-Hop in Utrecht, and moved to Amsterdam, to add some swing to her brother’s new cultural hub. One of the first people to join was Danny Groenewegen, who stood out as a inclusive and disarming teacher. Over the years others have joined the team: Jaro as a teacher, Nicky as teacher and organiser of events, Ally as teacher and promotor, and Ronald as part of the Ceuvel Swing Camp crew.
AlgoRhythm has grown into a dance school with it’s own identity; we are known for our inclusivity and collaborative atmosphere. We pay a lot of attention to providing a good learning environment for everyone, and encourage students to let go of traditional patterns such as gendered dance roles. Everyone can learn to dance, and everyone can lead, follow or mix up those roles!
